For the process junkies, here are some sketches and development. One of the challenges for this client is that I have to design a piece of art that will work as both landscape/widescreen for the website, and cropped to portrait orientation for the magazine.

First we have the initial thumbnails. These are just for the composition, as the subject matter was already decided in the brief. Thumb #1 is more of a birds eye view, while #2 is closer to worms eye, for a little more dramatic/cinematic tension.

The client chose #2, so then I went ahead and drew up a tighter sketch.

And here’s how it ended up in print (photographed in dramatic lighting to boot!)
