End of a Pax Americana
Last week I drew two Uncle Sams. I can't share the other one just yet, but here's old U.S. straining under the burden of global leadership, relating to an article by Dr. Adam Garfinkle.
Along with the points in the article such as the Death of Grand Strategy, the editor sent me the following suggestions before I started: "Uncle Sam can't bear the burdens of global leadership. America's leaders are focusing more on domestic affairs than exporting democracy to the world. America turning inward. Uncle Sam recognising limits to power."
Below is some of the process used to achieve the illustration, starting with quick 'thumbnail' sketches. From L-R: Uncle Sam carrying the weight of the world; Death of grand strategy; Same again, different view; Looking inward; Same again; America turning in on itself; U.S. seeing a world of Northern Americas...
And below are the sketch, inks and finished art. Drawn with brush and ink, digitally coloured. Please click for a closer look...
The issue is now available to read via iTunes.
